Eileen Mattiucci
I am a lifelong beach glass collector who was born and raised on the North Shore of Long Island, New York only miles from the beach. I still live on the North Shore of Long Island in Rocky Point, and live two blocks from the shore. The waters of the North Shore of Long Island are called Long Island Sound, which is nestled between Long Island and Connecticut. I have always felt blessed to grow up with beaches literally surrounding me. I never took it for granted, and discovered that the beaches have many gifts for us to treasure, which in turn, began my lifelong enthusiasm for searching for beach glass. Having the beach so close to me geographically, also made me feel very close to the water spiritually as well. So being at the beach is like being home to me. Even now, I still feel that childlike excitement when I discover a piece of beach glass. It is like receiving a gift that you have always wanted, because each piece of glass is so special and unique.

I am a self taught jewelry designer, and I feel I have found my passion in life by creating jewelry with these beautiful, raw materials. The Glass Mermaid was conceived in March 2007. But for years, I have always known I was going to create something with these pieces, but I didn’t know what. Then one day I thought, what could be better than wearing a piece of beach glass and always having that reminder of the beach and the ocean with you? So I started creating designs by wrapping silver wire around the pieces of glass. I believe sterling silver compliments the beach glass more than gold, and so that is why I like working with sterling silver. The creating part of The Glass Mermaid is a small workshop I have created in my lower level family room. When you do something you love, the design ideas keep flowing, and each piece is created with the wearer in mind. I feel simple adornments, if any, is key to working with beach glass, because the real beauty is held in the glass. I create jewelry using my large personal collection of beach glass, and those pieces that have been given to me from other beach glass enthusiasts.

My hope is that I can pass along the beauty of the ocean to the people who have that same love of the ocean inside them. I believe that whether you live on or near the coast or not, the love of the ocean is in all of us; and that we all love the look of the ocean and the feeling we get when we are near the ocean.
